Aging & Celebrating Birthdays
Get
ready for the aging of America. It has
been widely noted that the United States
is on the verge of an unprecedented
demographic transformation. The shift
will be driven by two forces: the aging
of the huge baby boom generation and the
lengthening of average life spans. Baby
boomers are the nearly 80 million
individuals born between 1946 and 1964.
Only 7 years from now--in 2011--the
first of America's baby boomers will
reach age 65. The number of Americans 65
and older will more than double by 2030,
while the number of working-age
individuals will increase by only 25
percent.
The average age expectancy of a child
born in 1935 was 61. That has increased
to 76 today, and is projected to approach
80 by 2030. Within 30 years, the age
profile of the entire nation will match
that of retirement-haven Florida today;
about one in five Americans will be older
than 65 by 2025.
